A special picnic concert is planned for Mothers Day on Sunday 13 May by the  Friends of the Botanic Gardens and the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Naum Rousine.

A delightful musical programme, featuring guest artists Carol Trench and Tim Molloi, has been selected for the afternoon  which includes a selection of light and bright tunes chosen especially for Mums.  There is something for everyone from light classics to Broadway musicals.

The overture from Italian Girl in Algiers, a light hearted frivolous piece by Rossini will open the programme, followed by excerpts from Tchaikovsky's ballet Sleeping Beauty, and the lovely Dance of the Hours by Ponchielli.  Also included is Damenspende Polka by Strauss which, loosely translated means "women's contribution" to acknowledge the important role played in our lives by all mothers, grannies, aunts and sisters alike. 

Carol Trench who was a feisty Eliza Doolittle in the recent Playhouse production of "My Fair Lady", has chosen some terrific songs to suit her exuberant personality such as the up tempo version of  "The Rose" made famous by Bette Midler, "Special Star" the well known Mango Groove number sung by Claire Johnson, and a smoochy version of the famous Beatles song  "A Hard Day's Night".
 
Tim Moloi has included in his repertoire a few romantic numbers like "The very thought of You" and the 60's rock 'n roll number "Save the last dance for me".

Their combined talents are showcased in the duets "Islands in the Stream" and two Frank Sinatra numbers "I've got a crush on you" and "Me and my Shadow".

Celebrate this special occasion and enjoy this beautiful outdoor venue.  Make this a day to remember and surprise your Mum with a picnic basket filled with tasty treats. 

Please note the early starting time of 2pm - the concert will finish at 4pm.
